Winter Light Festival


Seoul City will hold a one-month winter festival featuring large-scale decorative lights at Gwanghwamun Square, It takes 20minutes from Hongdae by Bus, in central Seoul in the middle of next month.

It will also operate an exhibition hall at Seoul Plaza in central Seoul between Dec. 11 and Feb. 15, offering a rare chance for citizens to experience life at the King Sejong Station, a research facility for the Korea Antarctic Research Program.

Under the main theme of "Miracle Seoul: Seoul designed with lights," the Hi Seoul Winter Light Festival will use cutting-edge illumination technology to create beautiful artistic images. The first light festival took place last year at the Cheonggye Stream.

During this year's festival, lights will be set up on the facades of the buildings around the square to present large-scale light performances that will display different images, such as skies with moving clouds and also how Seoul looked in the past.

In the square, a variety of illumination artworks created by famous local artists will also be on show.

"The city will make the square a place of creative lights by utilizing new technologies. This festival will offer lights of hope to citizens in the cold winter," a city official said.

At Seoul Plaza, an ice ridge, which will measure 4.5 meters in width, 5 meters in height and 30 meters in length, will be built to create an Antarctic atmosphere.

Entrance fee : 1,000Won (Included rental skate and entrance)

A wind machine will be placed inside the ridge to simulate Antarctic weather conditions and to give an idea of what it is like at the King Sejong Station. There will also be a set of exhibits delivering warning messages about global warming.
